The upper back jaw is where implants most often run out of room. The sinus sits directly above it, and the bone in between is thin to start with.
Once the back teeth are gone, that bone shrinks further and the sinus effectively drops into the space. There is then too little bone left to hold an implant.
The name is slightly misleading. What is lifted is the membrane lining the floor of the sinus. Grafting material goes into the space underneath it.
That material turns into bone over several months, and the implant is placed into it once it has taken.
Expect swelling and some tenderness for a few days. You will be asked to avoid blowing your nose hard and to skip flying for a short period.
That last point matters for anyone travelling. It affects when you can fly home, so it needs to be built into your plan rather than discovered afterwards.
Most of the worry about this one comes from the name. Seeing it explained helps.
Honestly, the timeline varies: a new tooth can be ready within hours in the best case, or take the better part of a year in the most involved one. Step through the sequence.

It is done under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel the surgery. Afterwards expect swelling and tenderness for a few days, similar to having a tooth out.
