Small brackets are bonded to each tooth and connected by an archwire. Tightening and reshaping that wire at each visit applies steady pressure, and the teeth move through the bone over months rather than weeks.
Metal, ceramic and lingual (behind-the-teeth) versions all work on the same principle — the difference is how visible the hardware is, not how effective the movement is.
Fixed braces are usually the better route where teeth need to move a significant distance, rotate, or where the bite itself needs correcting — not just cosmetic straightening.
Clear aligners rely on the patient wearing them for the majority of each day, and they are limited in how much rotation or vertical movement they can achieve on their own.
Fixed braces are bonded in place, so there’s no compliance question, and they can handle more complex tooth movement in a single course of treatment.

An X-ray and a set of photographs show the position of every tooth and how the jaws meet. From this, the clinician works out how much movement is needed and which bracket type suits the case.
Any decay, gum inflammation or other dental work is dealt with first. Moving teeth through unhealthy gum or bone gives a worse, less stable result, so this step is never skipped.
Brackets are bonded to each tooth and the first, lightest archwire is fitted. This visit is not painful, though the teeth typically feel tender for a few days afterwards as they begin to move.
The archwire is tightened or changed roughly every four to eight weeks as the teeth move. For patients travelling from the UK, adjustment visits can often be scheduled around other trips or grouped where possible.
Once the teeth and bite reach the planned position, the brackets are removed and a retainer — fixed, removable, or both — is fitted to hold the result while the bone settles.

Where bone quality is good and the tooth is coming out anyway, the implant can go in at the same visit with a temporary crown straight away.

No. Routine progress can often be tracked with photos between visits, with in-person checks at the key stages of your plan. We confirm the likely number of trips once we know your treatment plan.
