Implant removal

When an implant has to come out.

Implants do fail sometimes. If yours is loose, sore or infected, it can be removed, and in most cases the site can be rebuilt and a new implant placed later.
Send an X-ray or three phone photos. A dentist looks at them and writes back with a provisional plan.

The three things worth knowing first

The usual reasons

Most failures come down to one of a few things: infection in the gum and bone around the implant, an implant that never gripped the bone properly, or a bite that loads it more heavily than it can take.

Occasionally the implant is fine and the problem is the crown or the bridge on top. That is worth knowing before anything is removed, because it is a much smaller job to fix.

What tells you something is wrong

Not every ache means failure. But these are worth a scan rather than a wait.

  • The implant or the tooth on it feels loose
  • The gum around it is sore, red or bleeding
  • There is a bad taste or smell that will not clear
  • The gum has receded and metal is showing

If you were treated elsewhere

We see patients whose implants were placed by another clinic, in Britain or abroad. You do not need to have been treated here to be seen here.

Send us a scan through the free assessment and we will tell you what we think, including when we think the answer is to leave it alone.

  • Treated elsewhere, at home or abroad
  • Send a scan for an opinion
  • Honest answer, including doing nothing
YOUR OPTIONS

If something feels wrong

Most problems are fixable, and the earlier they are looked at, the more options there are.

THE PROCEDURE

Procedure — interactive step-through

Honestly, the timeline varies: a new tooth can be ready within hours in the best case, or take the better part of a year in the most involved one. Step through the sequence.

FIRST VISIT

Finding out what is wrong

A scan shows the bone around the implant. Sometimes the implant is sound and only the crown needs attention, which is a much smaller job.

IF IT MUST COME OUT

Removing the implant

Under local anaesthetic. A failed implant that has lost its grip usually comes out easily. One that is still partly attached takes more work.

SAME VISIT, OFTEN

Cleaning and rebuilding

The site is cleaned. Where bone has been lost, grafting material can be placed to rebuild it ready for a new implant later.

THREE TO SIX MONTHS

Healing

The site heals. Where a graft was placed, that takes six to nine months before anything new can go in.

LATER

A new implant, if you want one

Once the bone has healed, a new implant can usually be placed. We scan again first to be sure.

THE COST

We publish our price list

Removal itself is one of the smaller charges on our list. What it costs to put right afterwards depends on what is left behind.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Implant removal, answered

How do I know if my implant is failing?

Looseness, soreness, bleeding gum, a taste that will not clear, or gum receding to show metal. Any of those is worth a scan.

It is done under local anaesthetic. An implant that has already lost its grip usually comes out easily.

Usually yes, though rarely on the same day. The site needs to heal first, and often needs bone rebuilt, which takes six to nine months.

Not usually — we can discuss temporary options during healing.

Yes. Send a scan through the free assessment and we will tell you what we can do.
