The three things worth knowing first
The thinnest bone in your mouth
The upper back jaw is where implants most often run out of room. The sinus sits directly above it, and the bone in between is thin to start with.
Once the back teeth are gone, that bone shrinks further and the sinus effectively drops into the space. There is then too little bone left to hold an implant.
The floor is lifted, not the sinus
The name is slightly misleading. What is lifted is the membrane lining the floor of the sinus. Grafting material goes into the space underneath it.
That material turns into bone over several months, and the implant is placed into it once it has taken.

What to expect afterwards
Expect swelling and some tenderness for a few days. You will be asked to avoid blowing your nose hard and to skip flying for a short period.
That last point matters for anyone travelling. It affects when you can fly home, so it needs to be built into your plan rather than discovered afterwards.

It sounds worse than it is
Most of the worry about this one comes from the name. Seeing it explained helps.
Procedure — interactive step-through
Honestly, the timeline varies: a new tooth can be ready within hours in the best case, or take the better part of a year in the most involved one. Step through the sequence.
Scan
A CBCT scan measures the bone between your jaw and the sinus, and shows the shape of the sinus itself.
Lifting and grafting
Under local anaesthetic, or a general if you prefer. The sinus lining is lifted carefully and grafting material is placed into the space beneath it. The gum is stitched closed.
Recovery
Swelling for a few days. You will be told not to blow your nose hard and to avoid flying for a period.
New bone forms
The graft turns into bone that can hold an implant. A scan confirms it before we go further.
The implant goes in
The implant is placed into the new bone, then heals for a further three to four months before the crown goes on.

Sinus lift, answered
Is a sinus lift painful?
It is done under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel the surgery. Afterwards expect swelling and tenderness for a few days, similar to having a tooth out.
Will it affect my breathing?
No. The sinus itself is not opened up or made smaller in any way that changes how you breathe.
Why do only upper back teeth need this?
Because that is where the sinus sits. No other part of the jaw has an air space directly above it.
Can the implant go in at the same time?
Sometimes, where there is still a reasonable amount of bone to start with. Where there is very little, the graft has to heal first.
Is there a way to avoid it?
Occasionally. Shorter implants or angled placement can sometimes reach usable bone instead. The scan tells us whether that is realistic for you.
